Suggestions
The fishing pier at Swy-a-Lana Park is a good place to drop a crap pot or try your luck fishing.
The cliffs at the Brickyard is also a spot to try for salmon while still fishing from shore.
There are lots of freshwater fishing options right within Nanaimo. Many of the lakes suck as Long Lake, Brannen Lake, Geen Lake, Colier Park etc. offer excellent fishing for trout and bass.
Ask some of the local tackle shops for the best advice. And be sure to check out the licensing requirements.

Mountain Biking:

Nanaimo Mountain Biking
"There's a week and a half of riding," said Bob Simpson of Pacific Rim Bicycles in Nanaimo. He is talking about the Dumont mountain bike trails: 90 kilometres of single track, logging roads and "hard core North Shore." Simpson also recommends Mt. Benson's West Ridge Trails. The mountain is laced with trails that rise from 600 feet to 3200 feet. "But you have to get up there to ride down," he warns. Head to Pacific Rim Bicycles for more information and maps, 250-390-2077.

Newcastle Island:

Newcastle Island
Newcastle Island possesses a rich natural and cultural history that makes it one of the most intriguing provincial parks in British Columbia.
The island's shoreline is dominated by steep sandstone cliffs and ledges that are punctuated by sandy gravel beaches. Caves and caverns abound along the shoreline, providing an appealing contrast to the undulating upland that is studded with Douglas-fir, Arbutus, Garry Oak and Dogwood trees.

Seawall Walk:

Nanaimo seawall
A pedestrian walkway that winds along the waterfront from Cameron Island to the Nanaimo Yacht Club. Visitors especially enjoy the section of the seawall near the Bastion, where craft shops and restaurants dot the path. The path continues to Swy-a-lana lagoon, and Maffeo-Sutton Park (behind the Civic Arena). It then continues along the water front and crosses over the Millstone River. A very pleasant walk any time of the year. Especially nice in the evenings of summer.
